New Law Bans Smoking in Car with Kids: But should it?

All current medical evidence points to it being unhealthy to inhale secondhand smoke, especially for children. It can lead to respiratory and ear problems to name a few. The more enclosed the space, the worse it can be. Everyone should be aware of this, and take precautions. It is irresponsible to expose children to this.

I hate smoking and being around smoking. I think it is horrible for your health, and a stupid thing to do. But should governments force the issue by making it illegal? (more…)

Expert Offers Gift Tips Sure to “Move” Children

As Carol DeHaven says in the press release below, “The key is to find gifts that also motivate the entire family to move.” Whether it is a gift, or just everyday life, actions speak louder than words. It is difficult and incredulous for a child hear a parent say one thing and do something else.

Ms. DeHaven has a lot of good ideas, although I am not familiar with all of the specific toys. (more…)

Vanderbilt Doctors Warn Against “Merry Christmas Coronary”

Some studies have actually shown an increase in the incidence of heart attacks (MI’s) during the Christmas holidays. Others have shown that the risk of death from these MI’s is higher also (possibly due to shorter medial staffing during the holidays). So the obvious reaction should be to try your best to decrease your risk of an MI.

The Vanderbilt physicians offer valuable advice toward this end. However, I think they left out a key factor, which is stress. There are so many things going on with the gift giving, parties, traveling, family reunions, etc. Good stress can affect you as much as bad, and it is additive. So plan ahead a little to limit it. New Exercise Recommendations for Older Adults

The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association have published 2007 exercise recommendations for older adults in the August, 28, 2007, issue of Circulation.

Their definition of older adults is:

  • people over 65
  • people aged 50 to 64 with chronic conditions (such as high blood pressure or other treated or untreated ongoing issues) or functional limitations (something that “impairs the ability to engage in physical activity”). (more…)
