Weekly Health Tip: How to save calories at restaurants (from our current issue)
“Restaurant portions are two to three times what you would serve yourself. Plan ahead by splitting an entrée, or doggy bagging before you even start. The more you are served, the more you are likely to eat, so only serve yourself a reasonable portion.”

I like Ms. Jayne’s advice! If I’m eating out with my kids, I always order very lightly. If I don’t get adequately full, I fill up with their left-overs, which they always have.

That’s a great idea, Dr. Parker. And as a bonus, it teaches your kids they don’t have to clean their plates; just stop when they’re full!

The other biggie is of course, what you order to drink. The coke that gets refilled… the sweet tea… the endless cup of coffee with creamer & sugar… we need to trade in for a glass of water with lemon or lime. I have been addicted to cokes, but have found water and lemon a surprisingly acceptable alternative once I got used to it.

That’s a great point, Judy–and a great tip about the water and lemon. Thanks.

I always ask specifically what’s in the food before I buy. Lots of times something will have a sauce that won’t be mentioned on the menu, so its useful to question those things (politely)!
